Every business we talked to before building CONNECT told us some version of the same story. They knew, in a general sense, that network security mattered. They just had no idea what that actually meant for a business their size, and every option they looked into seemed built for someone else, either an enterprise IT department or a hobbyist who enjoys reading firewall manuals for fun.
The gap we kept running into
Enterprise-grade security tools assume you have a dedicated IT team, a budget line for a security operations center, and staff who already speak the language of VLANs and intrusion detection systems. Consumer routers assume the opposite: that you just want internet access and do not care much beyond that. Almost nothing existed in between for the office manager running a dental practice, the owner juggling three retail locations, or the local IT provider trying to serve twenty small clients without hiring a security specialist.
That gap is where most small and medium businesses actually live. They are not too small to be targeted, the data on Texas cybercrime alone makes that clear, but they are too small to justify hiring the kind of team that could properly watch over a complex enterprise setup.
What we set out to build
We wanted something a business owner could actually use without needing to learn a new vocabulary first. That meant:
-
A setup process that does not require a technical background, scan a code and follow guided steps
-
Real protection working in the background, segmentation, monitoring, filtering, without demanding constant attention
-
Plain-language alerts on a phone instead of a dashboard full of jargon
-
A managed approach, so updates and monitoring happen as part of the service, not as one more thing on an already full plate
Why we did not build this as just another consumer gadget
It would have been easier to build a simple router and stop there. But the businesses we talked to needed more than that. A property manager needs to keep tenant Wi-Fi separate from the office network. A medical practice needs an audit trail, not just a firewall. An MSP needs to manage twenty client sites from one dashboard, not twenty separate logins. Building CONNECT to serve both a single home office and a growing MSP-managed fleet meant taking the time to get the underlying architecture right, not just the surface experience.
What we hope this changes
Our hope is straightforward. We want a business owner in Texas to be able to protect their network the same way they lock their front door: without a second thought, without needing a technical degree, and without wondering whether they did it right. Security should not be a privilege reserved for businesses large enough to afford a full IT department.
If you want to see what that looks like in practice, our business page walks through it, or our home page if you are looking at this for your household.
