A widely cited 2026 industry survey of more than eight hundred title and escrow professionals found that nearly 80 percent of firms faced a wire fraud attempt in the past year. More than 11 percent of the firms that were actually victimized lost over a million dollars in a single incident. Concern about wire fraud among title professionals rose sharply year over year, and for the second year running, it ranked as the single biggest threat facing the industry.
The pattern behind most of these losses is remarkably consistent. A fraudster spoofs or compromises an email account somewhere in the closing chain, waits quietly for the right moment, then sends updated wire instructions just before funds are due to move. The email looks entirely legitimate.
Everyone involved is moving quickly, because closings always move quickly, and that urgency is exactly what the fraud depends on.
One recent lawsuit illustrates the scale these incidents can reach. A title insurance company sued to recover more than four million dollars diverted from a single commercial real estate closing after a closing officer received what appeared to be confirmed wire instructions from the seller’s own counsel.
Every step looked procedurally correct. The instructions were still fraudulent.
For a title company, the lesson is not that your staff missed an obvious red flag. Well trained closers get fooled by these emails regularly, because the emails are built specifically to survive scrutiny. The lesson is that the email account itself, and the network it moves through, needs to be genuinely watched, not just the message content on any given day.
This is where continuous network monitoring earns its keep. A quiet, unmonitored point of connection, an old device still holding access, or a compromised inbox sitting unnoticed for weeks are exactly the conditions that let a business email compromise scheme succeed. AstraLink Connect’s Connect product exists to catch that kind of unusual activity before it becomes a six or seven figure wire.
The industry is not going to see wire fraud attempts slow down. The firms handling it well are the ones treating their network, and every email account tied to it, as something that deserves active, ongoing attention, not a policy reviewed once a year.
